The Styled Shoot Guide

For those that don’t know I am the founder of Wild Ones - which began in 2016 as styled shoots with Nicola Dixon.

I have organised around 50 styled shoots from Hawaii to Morocco and back again over the past 3 years and learnt pretty much everything about organising and executing a styled shoot. If you asked me what the best thing I have done for my business was, hands down I would say styled shoots.

Why styled shoots?

They have helped me grow my portfolio, shoot across the world and get out of the middle market! Get out of the middle market with styled shoots! Just a few years ago, I had a problem many photographers have, a portfolio full of weddings I didn’t want to shoot. I had found a career I loved, but I just didn’t connect with traditional weddings at the big hotels.

The clients that filled my heart and soul with joy were the ones who chose a more nontraditional path to getting married and valued photos that were more journalistic, un-staged, and full of emotional moments they wanted to be captured. I wished all of my clients would be like that. And to be honest, I wished I could get out of the dreaded “middle market” where so many photographers were.

I was working a ton of hours on my business (and holding down a job in hospitality as well), and I felt like I was taking one step forward and two steps back. I knew something had to change. I wanted a career in photography, but I wanted it to be meaningful work for me. I didn’t want to be just a photographer ticked off the wedding checklist. I wanted clients who valued what I did and were willing to invest in my services.
